Three Ways to Start and Control a Motor

Not every motor needs a drive. Choosing the cheapest adequate method is part of the specification.

Direct online (DOL)
Full voltage applied immediately, simplest and lowest cost.
Small, low-inertia loads where inrush current and mechanical shock are not a concern.
Soft starter
Ramps voltage on start, reducing inrush and mechanical shock.
Smooth starting is needed but speed does not have to vary during the run.
Variable speed drive
Full speed and torque control throughout operation, plus motor protection and diagnostics.
Energy saving, process control, high start frequency, or protection of the driven equipment.

Sizing is only half of it. Cable length, motor insulation, harmonic exposure and braking duty decide whether the drive needs filtering, a brake chopper or a different topology altogether, nine checks we run before quoting.
