Incremental vs Absolute. - What’s the difference?

Kübler have an extensive range of incremental and absolute encoders so understanding which one you need, will depend on your application.

 

Incremental encoders measure pulses per revolution (PPR) and are typically used for monitoring speed, position and direction. As the shaft rotates, pulses are sent to the controller, which calculates position and movement.

 

Absolute encoders can tell exactly how far through a rotation they currently are, allowing for more precise tracking, without the need to track pulses.

 

It’s important to note that incremental encoders detect changes in movement only. If power is lost, the position reference is also lost and must be re-established on restart.

 

How many pulses do you need?

 

The number of pulses determines how accurately you can measure rotation.
For example, a 360-pulse encoder detects and reports movement every 1°. This means, higher pulse counts provide finer position feedback. Generally, this value is also determined by the specification and requirements of the control system in use.

 

Incremental encoders

Incremental encoders measure speed on rotating axes and are available from miniature to heavy duty, with optical or magnetic sensing. Selected models offer programmable resolution up to 36,000 ppr, adjustable zero pulse position and selectable TTL or HTL outputs, helping reduce downtime and simplify setup.

 

 

Absolute encoders singleturn

Position detection over 360° with singleturn absolute encoders. Various sizes. High resolution up to 21 bit. Variety of standard, fieldbus, and Industrial Ethernet interfaces.

PROFIsafe encoders for safety applications

Bearingless Encoders

Reliable Speed Measuring with Magnetic Sensors

Bearingless encoders are the perfect alternative to bearing mounted encoders, due to their compact design and easy mounting options on almost any shaft diameter. Bearingless encoders from Kübler are already used today in drive and elevator technology, for asynchronous motors or external rotor motors, or in generators, large motors, and wind turbines.

 

Bearingless encoders are ideal for accurate speed measuring with a resolution of up to 16,000 pulses per revolution and available in HTL or TTL versions. Installation is quick and simple thanks to various shaft mounting options such as pressure seat, hub screw, or screw flange.
