Signal & Indication Devices

Machine status an operator can read from across the floor.

Signal towers, beacons, sounders and pilot lights from Werma, Qlight and SEL. Visual and audible signalling for machinery, control panels, conveyors and safety systems.

A signal only works if the right person notices it in time. Before the order, we check the device suits the distance, the noise and the light the operator is actually working in.

It starts before the order

Three questions we ask alongside the part number, so the signal reaches the person who has to act on it.

Question one

Where does it run?

Viewing distance and sightlines, ambient light and noise, washdown and dust, the mounting available, and whether operators wear hearing protection.

Question two

What is it doing?

How many states the machine has to show, whether it needs to be heard as well as seen, the supply voltage, and how the PLC drives it.

Question three

What if it is wrong?

A fault nobody notices, an alarm lost under plant noise, a colour that means something different on the next line, an operator walking up to a running machine.

The Werma range

Three ways to signal, depending on how far the message has to travel and whether it also has to be heard.

Also in the Werma range

The D120 beacon and sounder in 120 mm for longer sightlines, with permanent, flash, blink and rotating effects. The 956 LED bulb for retrofitting existing BA15D fittings without replacing the housing.

Building a tower from parts

Towers are specified as a stack: a base for the mounting you have, the light elements in the order operators read them, a buzzer if it needs to be heard, and a cover. Send us the states you need to show and we will list the parts.

Ask Us to Spec It

Not sure how many stages your tower needs?

Tell us the machine states and the environment. We will tell you what fits.

What the colours mean

The convention in IEC 60204-1 for machine indication. Worth agreeing across a site before the first tower goes up, so a red light means the same thing on every line.

Red

Emergency

A hazard, an emergency stop, or a condition needing immediate action.

Yellow / amber

Warning

An abnormal condition, an impending critical state, or a value out of range.

Green

Normal

The machine is running normally, or is ready to start.

Blue

Mandatory

An action the operator has to take. Used where red, yellow and green do not apply.

White

Neutral

General monitoring and confirmation, where no specific meaning is assigned.

Summarised for selection purposes. Confirm against the current edition of the standard and your own risk assessment before specifying a safety-related indication.

The brands behind the range

Three manufacturers, each strong in a different part of the range. Which one suits depends on the device, the mounting and the system it has to match, not on the badge.

We also supply Idec control and indication components for panel-front operator interfaces. Ask us if you are matching an existing Idec installation.

Seen, heard, or both

A beacon on its own works where the operator has line of sight and the area is quiet enough that they are not relying on it alone. Past that, a light gets missed.

A sounder carries around corners and through hearing protection in a way a light cannot, but it gives no indication of which machine or which fault. On a floor with several lines running, sound alone tells an operator something is wrong, not where.

Combination units solve both: the sounder brings attention to the area, the light identifies the machine and the state. That is usually the right answer on a noisy floor, and it is one device and one cable run rather than two.

Send us this and we can specify it

The machine states you need to show
Furthest point an operator has to see it from
Noise level, and whether hearing protection is worn
Mounting: panel top, bracket, pole or flat to the machine
Supply voltage and how the PLC drives it
Washdown, dust or outdoor exposure

Tell us the machine states and where the operator stands. We will spec the signal.

Whether it is one beacon on a pump or a tower on every cell in a new line, our team will scope the elements, base, sounder and accessories, and tell you what is in stock.

We supply and support the product. Your team or your integrator installs and commissions it. We make sure it is the right one.
