The Bernstein SMART safety system is a scalable industrial machine safety solution for the complete safeguarding of machines and industrial plants of any size. It reduces power and cabling runs, and helps you comply with AS4024 machine guarding requirements.
The SMART Safety System uses daisy chain diagnostics (DCD) to simplify safety integration and delivers real-time feedback to PLCs and safety controllers. This makes it ideal for engineers, OEMs and safety professionals seeking enhanced diagnostic visibility and reduced cabling complexity.
It starts before the order
Three questions we ask alongside the part number, so the safety chain suits the machine and the standard it has to meet.
Where does it run?
The guards, doors, flaps and access points it protects, how far apart they sit, and the washdown, dust and tamper risk around them.
What is it doing?
How many devices in the chain, whether existing mechanical e-stops come in, the coding level you need, and which controller talks to your PLC.

How the Smart Safety System works
SMART Safety is a customisable safety circuit. It links safety components like RFID sensors and e-stops together using a daisy chain topology.
This allows for the integration of existing mechanical safety devices (like e-stops) with full diagnostic feedback. They can be joined in via an M12 plug connection to a Smart T-Adaptor.
Comprehensive diagnostic monitoring — status, voltage, and SRF temperature — from linked components is fed back to your safety controller, which connects directly to your PLC.
Received a warning or switch-off signal? You will instantly see which safety switch, emergency stop device or safety sensor triggered a fault, reducing diagnostic time and machine downtime.
Depending on the issue, the SMART Safety system allows for a two-stage shutdown, to enable a controlled shutdown of your machinery.
You can add or remove components into the daisy chain as required, with minimal wiring. It will grow with you.
Connected safety components and system architecture
Eight components make up the chain: sensors and e-stops at the guard, adapters to bring existing devices in, and controllers and diagnostic modules that report back to the PLC. Ask us for photos and datasheets on the adapters and controllers.

The SRF sensor is a key component of the SMART safety system. By using coded RFID signals, ensure that your sensor cannot be defeated by simple measures, like an operator carrying a spare actuator.

Sensor will only work with a taught-in actuator.

Sensor will only work with a paired actuator.
