Industrial & Hazardous Area Lighting

Light every part of the site people have to walk into at night

Poor lighting is where slips, misreads and near-misses come from, and the worst-lit areas are usually the ones standard fittings cannot legally go. Raytec LED lighting covers both: workshop, walkway and yard lighting on one hand, IECEx-certified fittings for declared zones on the other.

How Site Lighting Gets Specified

Classify the area, match the fitting, verify the levels.

1

Classify the Area First

Ordinary, or a declared gas or dust zone. The classification decides the certification, and the certification decides which fittings are even eligible.

2

Match the Fitting to the Job

Linear battens for walkways and plant rooms, floods for yards and stockpiles, bulkheads and exit lighting for buildings — IECEx-certified where the zone requires it.

3

Verify Levels and Conditions

Lux levels checked against the task, plus environmental conditions such as amber turtle-friendly output on sensitive coastal sites.

The outcomes that matter on site.

Night Work Stops Being a Torch Job

Walkways, transfer points and plant rooms lit to the task instead of lit by whoever brought a hand lamp.

Certification Evidence Ready at Audit

Every fitting in a classified area carries its IECEx documentation — no scrambling when the auditor asks.

Downward energy trend

Lower Energy and Maintenance Cost

LED replacement cuts consumption and takes the recurring lamp-change task off the maintenance schedule.

Coastal Environmental Conditions Met

Turtle-friendly amber lighting satisfies environmental approval conditions on sensitive coastal sites.

Zone & Ex Classification

Which Zone Is the Fitting Going Into

Certification is specified per fitting, not per site. Find the zone the light has to live in, and the protection method that goes with it.

Zone
What the classification means
Equipment permitted
Zone 0 / 20Gas / Dust
Explosive atmosphere present continuously or for long periods.
Intrinsically safe Ex ia only. Very limited equipment is certified for this zone.
Zone 1Gas
Explosive gas atmosphere likely to occur in normal operation.
Ex d flameproof, Ex e, Ex p pressurised, Ex ia/ib, Ex m encapsulated.
Zone 2Gas
Gas atmosphere unlikely, and short duration if it occurs.
Ex n non-sparking, plus anything certified for Zone 1.
Zone 21Dust
Combustible dust cloud likely to occur in normal operation.
Ex t enclosures with IP6X dust-tight sealing and surface temperature control.
Zone 22Dust
Dust cloud unlikely, and short duration if it occurs.
Ex tc rated equipment, IP5X or IP6X depending on the dust characteristics.

Ex Protection Methods We Supply

Ex d
Flameproof
Enclosure contains an internal ignition without propagating it to the atmosphere.
Ex e
Increased Safety
Construction prevents arcs, sparks and hot surfaces arising in the first place.
Ex i
Intrinsic Safety
Circuit energy limited below the level needed for ignition. Used for instrumentation.
Ex p
Purge & Pressurisation
Positive internal pressure keeps the hazardous atmosphere out of standard equipment.
Ex n
Non-Sparking
Zone 2 equipment designed so that ignition sources do not occur in normal operation.
Ex t
Dust Protection
Dust-tight enclosure with limited surface temperature for Zone 21 and 22 areas.

Zone, gas group and temperature class are confirmed per project before equipment is specified. Send us the hazardous area classification drawing and we will match certification to it.
