What are cable glands?

Cable glands are mechanical sealing and termination devices. Cable glands protect electrical wiring from dust, moisture and help prevent corrosion and accidental damage. Cable glands typically combine a main enclosure with various locknuts, washers, seals, and attachment cones to form a tight seal.

Cable glands and components are available in a range of materials. Common materials include nickel-plated brass, stainless steel and nylon. Product approvals and IECEx certifications are available to suit applications within hazardous rated areas.

How are cable glands used?

Cable glands are used to form connections between the ends of cables and various electrical equipment. Cable glands join power, automation, control or telecommunication cables and electrical enclosures, and can be used for lighting, power, data and telecoms.

When used within potentially explosive atmospheres, cable glands must be approved for the specific type of cable and equipment they are being used in conjunction with. Glands are available to suit armoured, non-armoured and shielded cable. When correctly selected and installed, certified cable glands will maintain the ingress rating and protection method of the electrical apparatus they are used in conjunction with.
