A new solution for human & machine safety.
The Bernstein SMARTsafety system is a scalable industrial machine safety solution for the complete safeguarding of machines and industrial plants of any size.
It reduces power and cabling runs, and helps you comply with AS4024 machine guarding requirements.
The SMART Safety System uses daisy chain diagnostics (DCD) to simplify safety integration and delivers real-time feedback to PLCs and safety controllers. This makes it ideal for engineers, OEMs and safety professionals seeking enhanced diagnostic visibility and reduced cabling complexity.
Explore your options below.
How the Bernstein Smart Safety System Works (Machine Safety Diagnostics)
Digging into daisy chain diagnostics (DCD).
SMART Safety is a customisable safety circuit.
It links safety components like RFID sensors and e-stops together using a daisy chain topology.
This allows for the integration of existing mechanical safety devices (like e-stops) with full diagnostic feedback. They can be joined in via an M12 plug connection to a Smart T-Adaptor.
Comprehensive diagnostic monitoring - status, voltage, and SRF temperature - from linked components is fed back to your safety controller, which connects directly to your PLC.
Received a warning or switch-off signal? You’ll instantly see which safety switch, emergency stop (E-stop) device or safety sensor triggered a fault, reducing diagnostic time and machine downtime.
Depending on the issue, the SMART Safety system allows for a two-stage shutdown, to enable a controlled shutdown of your machinery.
You can add or remove components into the daisy chain as required, with minimal wiring. It'll grow with you.
Connected Safety Components & System Architecture
Non-contact Coded Safety Sensors
SRF
Monitor movable guards, flaps, and doors via RFID.
Illuminated Electronic E-stops
SEU 3/4
Easily see which e-stop has been actuated.
Electronic E-stops
SEU 2
Transmits device status to your machine control via DCD.
Connection Box
SEU 1
Integrate existing mechanical switches into your sensor chain and transmit status data via DCD.
Smart T-Adapter
SEU 1
A smart T-adapter and connection box combined in one device.
Programmable Safety Controller
SCR P
Collects diagnostics from your entire SMART system. Comms via Ethernet, Modbus or PROFINET.
Safety Controller
SCR DI
Monitors SRF/SEU devices in series and collects diagnostics.
Diagnostic Module
SRF DI
Makes DCD data from SRF/SEU devices available via IO-Link, USB or NFC interface.

SRF non-contact coded safety sensor
Monitor safety doors,ā hoods and flaps.
The SRF sensor is a key component of the SMART safety system.
By using coded RFID signals, ensure that your sensor cannot be defeated by simple measures, like an operator carrying a spare actuator.
SRF sensors let you choose your own safety tolerances:
- Low-coded: sensor will work with any actuator.
- High-coded: sensor will only work with a taught-in actuator.
- Unique-coded: sensor will only work with a paired actuator.
Achieve Cat. 4 / PL e and SIL CL 3 with the SRF sensor.
Build an intelligent diagnostic system.
Keep everything in view.
Bernstein offer simple drag-and-drop configuration software to help you start. No programming knowledge required.
And it's provided entirely free of charge, with no licencing fee.
Once you're set up, you'll receive comprehensive diagnostic data of all installed components of your safety system. Any errors can be easily identified.
Setting up more than one SMART Safety system? Copy your existing configuration to a USB stick to save time and preserve a backup.
